LCD refers to the liquid crystal glass panel that has encapsulated liquid crystal materials and extraction electrodes, excluding LCD drivers and controllers. It is the most primitive state of all LCD products. Glass products for direct users on the market are limited to low-density segment products.

LCM, or liquid crystal display module, is a LCD display product that integrates glass and LCD drivers. It provides a standard LCD display driver interface (4 bits, 8 bits, vga, etc.). The user operates according to the interface requirements to control the correct display of the LCD. LCM is a more integrated LCD product than glass. For small size LCD display, LCM can be easily connected to a variety of microcontrollers (such as single-chip microcomputer). However, for large size or color LCD display, it generally occupies a large part of the resources of the control system or can not be controlled at all. For example, a 320 × 240256 color LCM, is displayed in 20 fields per second (that is, a full screen refresh in one second and displayed 20 times). The amount of data transmitted in one second alone is as high as 320 × 240 × 8 × 20 equal to 11.71875Mb or 1.46MB. If the standard MCS51 series single-chip microcomputer processing assumes the repeated use of MOVX instructions to continuously transmit these data, considering the address calculation time, at least need to connect the 421.875mhz clock to complete the data transmission, it can be seen that the amount of processing data is huge.

Lcd terminal refers to the lcd display product which integrates all the devices and functional modules related to lcd display. Because most of the display and control work is done in the terminal, Therefore, it only needs to provide users with a low-speed standard serial interface to easily achieve a variety of display functions. Because lcd products, especially large-scale lcm products, need to deal with a large amount of information, and the design of software and hardware is complex, it is not a small challenge for ordinary engineers, and lcd terminals liberate users from the tedious research and development and debugging of lcm. Greatly speed up the progress of product research and development, and because of the professional division of labor, ensure the stability of the whole product, production and maintenance are more convenient. In general, in order to facilitate the use of users, lcd terminals often integrate the keyboard and touch screen interface, so that the design of human-computer interaction products is more flexible and convenient. In short, the computer display system is analogous to the glass equivalent to the display tube, and the LCM is the equivalent of a display. On the other hand, LCD terminal is equivalent to the collection of video card, motherboard and display (such as display terminal and POS terminal which are widely used in banking and logistics system). When users choose LCD products, they mainly consider the following points according to their own situation:

1. Glass is only suitable for bit-segment, low-cost applications, need external driver and single-chip microcomputer as LCD driver, occupy some system resources, but this way is more flexible, the cost is also relatively low.

2. LCM is suitable for the application of large batch and prominent cost contradiction. In the case of small and medium batches, generally the annual consumption does not exceed 1000, the cost of adopting LCM will be similar to or even higher than that of using LCD terminal because of the loss of R & D investment and market opportunity, and the maintenance and production of small batch products is a problem.

3. LCD terminal is suitable for small and medium batch applications, especially in project applications, because the profit of the project comes from the efficiency of the project, using LCD terminal to do system integration, you can achieve your display requirements in the fastest time.
