What is quantum dot display (QD)? Quantum dots are very small semiconductor particles, only a few nanometers in size, so small that their optoelectronic properties are different from those of larger particles.

The luminescence principle of quantum dots is that the materials of quantum dots are stimulated by electricity or light, and the materials of quantum dots will emit light at specific frequencies, and these frequencies can be changed by changing the size and shape of quantum dots to achieve precise tuning. To put it simply, the photoelectric properties of quantum dots are different from those of luminous display particles in the past. because the particles are very small, in nanometers, the display color of quantum dots is changed by changing the size and shape of the particles. it is also because of this, in theory, the chromatography displayed by quantum dots is more continuous and the cost will be lower.

Quantum dots of different sizes emit different colors. When stimulated by light or electricity, quantum dots emit colored light. The color of the light is determined by the composition material and size and shape of the quantum dots. Generally speaking, the smaller the particles are, they will absorb long waves. The larger the particles are, they will absorb short waves. 2 nm-sized quantum dots can absorb long-wave red and show blue, while 8 nm-sized quantum dots can absorb short-wave blue and show red. This property enables quantum dots to change the color of the light emitted by the light source. Compared with the original display technology, the RGB tricolor displayed by quantum dots will be purer.

In fact, quantum dot technology is not a new technology, as early as 1983, scientists at Bell Laboratories in the United States have studied it. Only a few years later, Mark Reid, a physicist at Yale University in the United States, officially named this semiconductor microblock as "quantum dots" and is still in use today, so strictly speaking, this is not a new technology, only in recent years, the display giant led by Samsung has developed a strong interest in quantum dot technology.
